ChatGPT Outage Hits US Users, OpenAI Responds — India Unaffected
OpenAI’s ChatGPT experienced a major outage in the US, with over 12,000 reports logged on Downdetector. While users in Hungary also faced issues, access remained normal in India. OpenAI confirmed disruptions across multiple features but said mitigation efforts were underway. The outage followed the launch of its Codex Mac app, which saw 200,000 downloads in a day. Social media buzzed with memes and jokes as users reacted to the downtime.
OpenAI’s popular chatbot ChatGPT faced a widespread outage on Tuesday, impacting thousands of users in the United States. According to outage-tracking site Downdetector, over 12,000 reports were logged by 3:25 pm ET. While users in the US struggled with error messages such as “Hmm… something seems to have gone wrong,” access in India remained normal.
Global Impact and VPN Workarounds
Reports indicated that the outage extended beyond the US, with users in Hungary also affected. However, switching to VPNs allowed access in countries like Ireland, Canada, India, and Poland, though response times were slower in some regions.
OpenAI’s Official Statement
On its status page, OpenAI acknowledged the disruption: “We’re currently experiencing issues. Some users may experience problems loading or starting conversations. We have applied mitigation and are monitoring recovery.”
The outage disrupted nearly all major features, including conversations, search, image generation, Codex, and Atlas.
Timing and User Reactions
The disruption came just a day after OpenAI launched its Codex app for Mac, which saw over 200,000 downloads on its first day, according to CEO Sam Altman.
As news of the outage spread, searches for “ChatGPT down” surged on X (formerly Twitter). Users shared memes and jokes, with many humorously admitting they had to rely on their own brains or rushed to X to confirm if the outage was global.
