The Idaho murder victims’ families’ legal battles are far from over.
Four students were killed at the University of Idaho — Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin. And now their families are suing Washington State University. The school is where convicted murderer Bryan Kohberger was attending to get his Ph.D. at the time of the horrific killings, and this lawsuit claims WSU is liable for letting him walk free with the knowledge he was dangerous.
According to legal docs cited by People, the January 7 lawsuit filed at Superior Court of Washington in and for Skagit County makes the claim that Kohberger was “an employee with a known history of threatening, stalking and predatory behavior”:
“[The] plaintiffs seek to hold WSU liable for its own decisions and actions to remain idle in the face of known extreme and repeated instances of discrimination, sexual harassment and stalking by Kohberger occurring in its educational program … That ultimately culminated in Kohberger stalking and murdering the decedents.”

The lengthy lawsuit continues, claiming WSU didn’t give Kohberger proper consequences for his alleged disturbing behavior:
“WSU brought Bryan Kohberger to Pullman, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest, to serve as a Teaching Assistant in the Criminal Justice and Criminology Department, while he also worked to obtain a Ph.D., with a study focused on sexually motivated burglars and serial killers. Kohberger was heavily reliant on WSU, which paid him a salary, provided free on-campus housing, medical benefits, and free tuition, all conditioned on his behavior and subject to being revoked … Almost immediately upon his arrival to the Pullman-Moscow community, Kohberger developed a reputation for discriminatory, harassing, and stalking behavior, instilling substantial fear among young female students and fellow WSU employees, necessitating regular security escorts for multiple females.”
The suit also alleges WSU allowed the 31-year-old to enroll despite past issues:
“Before WSU brought Kohberger to the Pullman-Moscow community, he had a history of heroin addiction, had been arrested for theft, and had made numerous posts over a period of years on public online forums commenting about his inability to feel emotion and ‘crazy thoughts’.”
In the legal docs, the victims’ families cite claims that Kohberger was removed from a high school program over “problems with women”. They also mentioned how allegedly “local business owners had become so alarmed at his behavior toward young women that staff kept electronic notes about him to warn female staff when he arrived”.
All in all, this lawsuit argues that WSU didn’t do enough to protect local communities from someone who they believe should’ve suffered more consequences for his alleged behavior:
“It is critical for universities to promptly identify and appropriately respond to stalking behavior.”
A lot to take in…
Our heart continues to be with Kaylee, Madison, Xana, and Ethan’s families as they go through more legal stressors. Thoughts??
