Instagram suffered a brief outage in the US on February 4, with thousands of users reporting login errors, feed issues, and posting problems. The service was restored later the same evening, though Meta has not released an official statement. The outage coincides with Meta’s plans to test premium subscription tiers across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, while keeping core features free.
Instagram experienced a short but widespread disruption in the United States on February 4, leaving thousands of users unable to access the app. According to DownDetector, the outage began around 5:30 pm PT and affected multiple regions. Users reported login failures, feed errors, and issues with posting content.
Scale of the Outage
Around 10,000 users flagged problems during the downtime. DownDetector data showed that 87% faced website access issues, 9% reported app malfunctions, and 4% encountered login errors.
By late evening, Instagram services were restored, though parent company Meta has yet to issue an official statement regarding the outage or recovery.
Social Media Reactions
The disruption quickly trended online, with frustrated users sharing memes and updates. Many turned to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm whether the outage was widespread, while others noted problems across both Instagram’s mobile app and web version.
Meta’s Upcoming Paid Features
Meanwhile, Meta is preparing to introduce premium subscription tiers across Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. According to TechCrunch, the company will begin testing optional paid features in select regions in the coming months.
Meta emphasized that core app functionalities will remain free, while premium features will be rolled out gradually. Feedback from pilot markets will shape the final offering, marking a significant shift from Meta’s traditional reliance on advertising revenue.
